Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee involving a goatherd named Kaldi. Legend says that Kaldi went to go investigate where his goats were after not returning to him after calling out to them. After climbing a near hill, he noticed his goats running about butting one another and dancing on their hind legs. As he watched further he noticed that the goats were chewing on the glossy green leaves and red berries of a tree that he had never noticed before. The next day the same goats went back to the same grove of trees and repeated the process. This time the goatherd decided he would give some a chew as well, figuring that since his goats didn’t get poisoned it was safe. He experienced the caffeine charge that we all love and crave to get going. Soon word spread about these magical trees and coffee was born and became an important part of Ethiopian culture.
