Obviously we all know what a coffee bean looks like, but did you know that its actually a seed from the cherries of the tree? So since its a seed then it must of came from a tree that flowers making it a fruit, yup you heard that right. Coffee is a fruit….. Drink up!
The coffee cherry takes nearly a year to mature after flowering! The average coffee tree produces 10 lbs of cherries each year, yielding only 2 lbs of green beans. Each cherry contains two seeds which are hulled out and processed to dry in various ways depending on the growing region.
Some coffee trees produce cherries with only one seed inside and is called the peaberry.
